Lucas' office, late afternoon [NFB]
Feb. 12th, 2006 10:10 pm[ooc: but you can mention them going back there]
Nadia led the way back into Lucas' office, which was a chaotic affair of papers, invoices, and extra stock. She gestured for Veronica to take a seat and perched on the edge of Lucas' desk.
"What I'm going to tell you is pretty weird, even for Fandom, I think. But if I'm going to find out who my family is, I think you'll have to know everything.
"I'm from Argentina, but I don't think I was born there. When I was very young, I was in Russia. I'm not sure where. I was . . . held, by a group of scientists. They . . . experimented on me. Injected me with some kind of elixir which made me write things. I was there until I was five or six, I think. I'm not sure. I was broken out by a man named Vaughn, an American, and he brought me to Buenos Aires.
"I lived in an orphanage, first, run by Sophia Vergara. I guess Vaughn knew Sophia, or something, and that's why he brought me there. I don't know for sure. I lived at the orphanage for maybe five years. One night, one of the men who helped out at the orphanage came in and tried to . . . attack one of the other girls. I woke up while he was doing this, and I hit him, made him let her go. The man was a friend of Sophia's; I thought she would be angry with me, so I ran. I never went back to the orphanage.
"After that, I lived on the streets of Buenos Aires, until I was arrested for robbing a convenience store. I'm not a criminal. I needed to rob people to survive. A man from the government, Roberto Fox, came to me in jail and said he thought I was special. I'd been robbing people and things for years, and I hadn't been caught until then. He offered me a place with the government, working as an agent. Sophia visited me there, too, and she wanted me to take that place, but another woman, Maria Vargas, came and offered to send me to school here, instead.
"I just wanted to live a normal life, you see. Mr. Fox said that when I graduated, I could still come work with him, if that's what I wanted to do. Sophia didn't like it, but she said it was my choice, and she was proud of me. So I came here, to Fandom.
"The thing is, I don't know anything about my parents. I asked Sophia once, but she said she didn't know, either, she just knew that William Vaughn brought me to her when I was young. But I . . . remember some things. From Russia. Mostly names. I don't know what they mean, but maybe it would be a place to start?"
Nadia pulled a page out of her notebook and offered it to Veronica. It had a list of names and a brief description written on it:
Dr. Jong Lee. The man who experimented on me in Russia. He would talk, sometimes, after injecting me. I don't think he knew I could listen.
Milo Rambaldi: the person who made the elixir. His name was mentioned a lot, but I don't think he was still alive. If he was, maybe they could have just asked him for his message, instead of injecting me. They said a word, sometimes, discendente. I don't know what it means, but maybe it'll help?
Derevko. I think this might be a last name. They said it for three different people? They were worried about these people finding them, I think.
Novgorod 21. I have no idea what that means. But I remembered it, and you said any details I thought might help. . . .
There were other things they used to say, not names as much, but . . . titles? They talked about the Passenger, and the Chosen One a lot. Sometimes they'd talk about Il Dire. And something called the Sphere.
"There was a symbol, too. It looked like . . ." Nadia glanced around Lucas' office, looking for a pen. As she pushed papers around, she found a small scrap with a symbol written on it:
<O>
"Madre del dios," Nadia stared at it for a long moment, then pushed it towards Veronica. "Okay, how the heck does my boss have the symbol I remember from when I was experimented on as a child?"

"I have no idea, but it's kind of weird," she admitted. "How'd you end up working here?"

"I'd say the first thing to do would be research William Vaughn and see if we can track him down. Is that okay with you?"
