Room 507, Saturday morning

Nadia woke up before Walter did. Which meant that after a little while of wandering around the room, looking for some candy food or some candy toys, she got bored and had to try to wake him up.

*Poke.*

That didn't work.

*Poke. Pokepokepokepokepoke!*

Nope. Though the poking method may have worked better if she poked Walter, and not his pillow.

So Nadia went across the hall to get Furrball and brought him back to drop on top of Walter, instead.

"Ah!" Walter jolted awake when wee kitty claws dug into him.

"Hey!"

"You're awake! I'm bored. Let's play!"

Walter scrambled out of bed. "I'm hungry. Food, then play."

"Okay." Nadia was nothing if not agreeable to the idea of candy food. "But there's no food in here. I checked."

"Then I have to tickle you!" Walter announced, then pounced.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!" Nadia giggled and squirmed. "Tickling me doesn't get you food, dummy!"

"I'm not a dummy." Walter stopped tickling her and huffed. "You're a dummy. And you'd better be nice or I won't share my breakfast with you."

Nadia took advantage of the break in tickling to tickle back. "Then I'll just have to make me some candy empanoodles!"

Flailing sent one of the rings flying off of Walter's much smaller fingers. "Hey! Hey! Hey!" He was supposed to be the one doing the tickling!

He should probably take those rings off, too.

Ooo, shiny thing! Nadia and Furrball both went running after the flung ring.

"Mine!" Walter yelled and pounced on his flung ring. "Mine, mine, mine! Get your own rings."

She had a dumb old cat. He had something better. He'd have to go get Pup to show Nadia who had the better pet.

"I don't want one of your dumb rings, anyway! An' I don't need your dumb breakfast! You're just a dumb . . . boy!" Uh oh. Walter had made Nadia cry.

Doooooooooooooooom.

Walter looked befuddled.

She wasn't supposed to cry.

His mum would Not Approve of his making a girl cry.

"I'm sorry," he said, awkwardly patting her on the back. "I'll give you a ring."

Nadia sniffled. "Really? An' . . . an' we can make breakfast an' be friends, right?"

Just don't tell my mum I made you cry. "Uh huh." Walter looked at the ring he snatched up and held it out to Nadia.

"Do you want one of these? Only I'm not supposed to let other people have them, but you're my friend."

Nadia nodded. "I'll take real good care of it, promise."

"Okay." His da wasn't doing to approve if he found out that he'd given someone one of his rings, but his mum wasn't going to approve if she found out he'd made a girl cry.

Surprisingly or not, he was more afraid of his mum's reaction.

"Just don't lose it. Now come on, I'm hungry."

"Okay!" Nadia put the ring on her thumb. "I can make cereals or empanoodles."
