Room 502/4/6, Tuesday afternoon

A day without classes meant that Nadia was sitting up on her bed, painting her toenails when her old cellphone suddenly rang.

"//Santos. . . . Yes, sir. . . no, sir, just surprised by the call. . . . Yes, sir, I'm on leave. . . . No, sir. No, sir. No, sir. I don't know, sir, that's very strange. . . . Yes, sir. An assignment? Sir, I'm on leave . . . yes, sir, I understand that. . . . Immediately. Yes, sir, I understand that this is important--yes, sir. May I have a few moments to consider, sir?//"

Nadia set her phone down at stared at Furrball for a long moment, her mind working furiously. SIDE wanted her for an assignment. Long term, deep cover. An excellent opportunity, a promise of a completely clean slate, one hell of a paycheck . . . but starting immediately.

But, really, she didn't have to think very long before she picked the phone back up. "//Sir? I'm afraid I'll have to turn down your offer, sir. . . . Yes, sir. I understand. Thank you, sir. Good-bye.//"

Really, like she was going to leave now?

Pippi wandered into the room crumpling up some paper she had in her hand and tossed it at the wall by her bed.

"Hey, Pippi."

"Hey." she said a little sullenly.

Pippi being sullen? "What's wrong?"

"Stupid letter. Stupid old lady. Stupid... everything."

That made . . . less sense than usual. Nadia glanced at the crumpled paper. "Okay, I'm going to need a bit more to go on, than that."

"Did I ever tell you about the annoying but probably well meaning nosy old biddy Miss Prissillius?"

"I dunno, maybe? It sounds kinda familiar,"

"She doesn't think this is a good school and she's got a bunch of lawyers to say that I gotta come back to Vemmerby and they'll choose a new school for me to go to."

After a handwavey trip to the library, and his encounter in the Revolutions class, Alphonse came straight back to the room, looking to be in good spirits.

"Hey, Al, what's up?"

"Right now? Not much," he replied. "But so far it's been a good day."

"Cool. I've done a whole lot of nothing, today. It feels good."

"Yeah," Alphonse agreed. "I ran into someone I know from back home in one of the classrooms today."

Nadia blinked. ". . . A new student?"

"No, he's too old to be a student," Alphonse answered, shaking his head; it was an amusing assumption. "He was talking about something for a class."

"And he was just, like, randomly in the school? Was he a teacher, then?"

"It was just for the class period," he said. "The teacher of the class was still there."

"Pippi, hey," Alphonse greeted. "It's been a while."

"Yeah, that's kinda odd since we live together huh?"

"Eh, different lives, different schedules I suppose," Alphonse replied.

Pippi smiled. "I guess yeah. What you been up to?"

He shrugged. "Not too much. Today's went pretty good though. You?"

Pippi's shoulders slumped.

"I... Might not be around for the summer."
