The roof of Empire Records and Bidet, Thursday evening

The roof of Empire Records and Bidet had been . . . decorated. There were Chinese lantern string lights draped over the giant letters of the lit sign, with a picnic blanket set up with a fondue set on a tripod beneath it. Nadia herself was leaning quietly on the edge of the roof, watching the street.

She just hoped everything had gone according to plan. She'd never tried to organize something this big before.

Still, it was worth it, so long as Walter enjoyed it.

And the bottle of ice wine sitting in the cooler and the pile of blankets and pillows behind the sign? Well, that was so that they could both enjoy the rest of Walter's birthday.

Walter finally made his way upstairs after a full tour of the island and a bit of reminiscing about some of the things he and Nadia had shared.

He stopped to take in the details of Nadia's final preparations and broke into a broad smile. This whole day was above and beyond what he'd expected.

"Excuse me," he said, raising his voice. "I'm looking for a beautiful young woman named Elena?"

Nadia turned with a grin. "I was beginning to think you'd never get here." She leaned back casually against the edge of the roof. "Are you having a good birthday?"

Walter definitely appreciated the view and came closer to appreciate it better. "I am having the best birthday. I am well and truly impressed."

"Well, you only turn 15 once."

Nadia hated celebrating her birthday.

But she loved other people's.

"I can't believe everyone went along with it. . . . I'm pretty glad I decided against putting the handcuffs on while I waited."

"A good idea." Walter approached her and reached out to take her hands. "A few of them made me work for it and you did send me all over the island. You might have been uncomfortable after a while."

"Also wouldn't have been able to do this." She dragged him closer to plant a very large, deep kiss on him.

Best. Birthday. Ever.

Or at least, that was what Walter would have been thinking if he hadn't been concentrating on kissing Nadia back as thoroughly as he could.

Which was all well and good, but after awhile, she did have to breathe. "And . . . I promise . . . there's no . . . hot sauce . . . in the fondue."

Walter kissed her nose and glanced over his shoulder at the fondue pot. He should probably make sure to properly appreciate all of her hard work, but lips....

But hard work and food and her lips weren't leaving her face.

"You are amazing."

"You deserve it," Nadia responded simply.

That called for a hug. "Thank you. Now show me what you've done so I can properly appreciate it?"

Nadia bounced up on her toes to give him another quick kiss, then lead the way over to the picnic blanket. "I have an aged cheddar fondue with walnuts, bread, apples . . . um, stuff. And a chocolate one for dessert. And. . . ." She pulled out the bottle of wine, then gestured to the nest of blankets. "We can do that in whatever order you like."

"I'm impressed." Walter sat down. "Food first. We have to keep our strength up, right?"

Nadia had had the heat on the fondue set for awhile yet, and started unpacking the things for dipping. "As you wish."

That day, she was amazed to discover that when he was saying "As you wish", what he meant was, "I love you."

Walter happily settled in for the unusual experience of letting someone else pamper him. Definitely a birthday to remember.
