The adventure story, second long bit
Aug. 10th, 2005 03:13 pmElena wanted to scream at Mario when she saw him dive into the water. What was he thinking? Everyone knew that sirens lived to lure handsome young men to the death in the water. Sure, Phillipa was not your average siren maiden, having not even BEEN a siren until very recently. She treaded water, searching for where he went. At the edge of Captain Penelope’s ship, Calliope searched as well.
“Mario,” they shouted! “Phillipa! Mario!”
There were bubbles coming up on Elena’s left, the same bubbles that had floated to the surface every time Phillipa had shown her face. She was coming, but Mario was nowhere to be seen.
Elena’s heart clenched in her chest. She was damned well not going to lose her man now!
The water frothed into a fury and finally, Phillipa surfaced, her lovely face turned pale and slightly green by her time in the water. She smirked at Elena and kicked her tail fin to rise higher out of the water, revealing what she had clutched to her chest.
Make that WHO.
Mario blinked sheepishly at Elena as she scowled back at him. He wasn’t as strong a swimmer as Elena, and had been easily dragged under.
“Look what I found,” Phillipa sang. “I think I will keep it.”
“No, Phillipa,” Elena swam slowly forward. “You can’t keep him.”
Phillipa looked confused. “But it’s pretty and it was in the water,” she declared. “That means its mine!”
Behind Elena, Callipoe was breathing hard. Elena couldn’t turn herself away to see what was wrong with her friend, though. Mario was in danger. “If you keep him, he’ll die.”
Phillipa shook her head. “Nuh-uh. I’ll take good care of him.”
Mario grimaced, and seemed to be slipping lower in the water.
“He can’t breathe underwater!”
“Why not? I can.”
“He’s not a siren!”
“Neither was I.”
“Phillipa, please! I . . . I . . . .”
“You-you-you?”
Mario raised his eyebrows, remaining silent. He was waiting for Elena to say it.
“I—“
Then he vanished!
Phillipa scowled and dropped below the water as Elena treaded water and spun in a circle, searching for where Mario may have gone.
Calliope was grinning like a fool. And hauling on a rope.
“What’d you do?!”
“Went fishing.”
Elena swam over quickly and scaled the side of the boat like a gecko to get to help Calliope pull. First the shiny shoe appeared, then drenched trousers, and finally, Mario’s grinning face as he held Phillipa in a death grip and Elena and Calliope pulled them both on board.
Phillipa was quickly placed in a holding tank under the deck so they could bring her back to her devoted family. Another mission well accomplished. Elena grabbed Mario in a passionate embrace, their wet clothes and hair clinging to their skin.
He ducked his head to kiss her hard, then leaned his chin on her shoulder.
“You . . . what,” he asked?
“Nothing,” Said Elena. “It’s not important.”
She could feel his smirk as he turned her around and started walking with her to their quarters.
She was going to have to thank Calliope for her timing, later.
