The roof, noon

Nadia got to the roof early for operation first date: take two. Not because she was nervous. And certainly not because she was worried Walter wouldn't show. If he didn't, she'd kill him.

Oh. Maybe she could kill him if she had to.

Damned Pip. She certainly hoped that at some point her first thought upon seeing anyone would eventually not be "could I kill you?"

She stood at the edge, her face turned up towards the sky, enjoying the sun and the breeze. She should work on getting a nice tan, this summer. And not turning into a red-eyed monster.

And how about that? There came Walter lugging a blanket and a picnic basket, also early for operation first date: take two. Because he was not going to stand Nadia up twice.

He stood in the roof door and silently watched her. He was just waiting for her to notice him, not doing anything schmoopy like thinking about how much he liked her and how lucky he was that she was there waiting for him.

He was most definitely not thinking about last Saturday.

Last Saturday was to be stricken from the history books, as far as Nadia was concerned. She turned, somehow getting the feeling she was being observed, and smiled at Walter. "Hey." You made it. I was worried.

"Hey." He hefted the basket at her and smiled. I made it.

"Are you ready to find out the benefits of having an English butler for a boyfriend?"

"Absolutely. Do you need a hand with that?" She crossed over to him, reaching out to help with the basket.

She might still have not been entirely clear on the concept of what a butler actually did.

Walter handed her the blanket instead. "Can you spread that out?" He set the picnic basket down and started pulling out plates and napkins and a variety of beautifully butler-fu'ed foods. Hush, it's now a verb, too.

Nadia spread the blanket out across the rooftop and arranging the plates and napkins and things. If she'd known anything about feng shui, she might have been carefully arranging things according to the cardinal directions for the most efficient manipulation of Chi.

She doesn't, though, so she's arranging it like an ordinary picnic.

As though any picnic held on Fandom High's roof could be ordinary.

Walter passed her the covered dish with the picadas and settled himself on the blanket. "There's a little bit of everything. And now we can watch the clouds or tell funny stories or..." notice how pretty she looked when they weren't freaking out about things.

The wind gusted, blowing a few of the napkins around, and Nadia moved to grab them. "Sounds great to me. So, funny stories. Well, this one time at band camp . . ." Nadia proceeded into a lengthy telling of an adventure she'd had in Buenos Aires, involving three other street kids, a gang of drug dealers, a transvestite, a stuffed fruit bat, two cans of bright pink oil-based paint, a water gun, and, of course, tequila. ". . . and the cops just shook their heads, and completely left us alone. Marcos was a genius."

Walter ended up flopping back on the blanket and holding his sides against the ow, that's too damned funny by the time she got to the use of the stuffed fruit bat in relation to the transvestite.

"You win! The Argentine team scores in the first."

Nadia grinned, still chuckling a bit, herself. "Well, of course. The Argentine team always scores early in the game. Question is, can the English team keep up?"

Walter sat up and scooted a little closer to Nadia to not at all casually put an arm around her.

"You can't fool me. Pippi told me about your plans for body paint. Just how did you expect to get me to do that?" Because he was willing to do it, but he was definitely going to make her work for it.

"Hmm. The Swedish vixen was spilling secrets, it seems." Nadia leaned into him happily. "And I thought I'd try asking really nicely." She batted her eyelashes. "You want to support your team, don't you?"

"I can do that by waving a flag and yelling." Not working hard enough yet, although eyelash batting and leaning were a start. "At least your idea was for a union flag and not the Argentine flag."

"Well, someone has to root for the losing team." Nadia tilted her head Veronica Mars style. "And if you're only willing to wave a flag and yell, then you're obviously not in the true spirit of football. Your country practically invented football hooligans. Where's your team spirit?"

No fair with the head tilt. "The world cup was suspended during the war." Was that an answer? Maybe.

"What else do I get out of it?"

"The war isn't on, now," Nadia leaned in closer until she was only a couple of inches away from him. "And I'm sure I can think of something to do with you without a shirt on."

"Okay." Walter closed those last couple of inches for a kiss. Just to seal the deal, of course.

But of course. Nadia didn't even flinch this time, just went straight for the good stuff.

Of course, that's when Fraser steps onto the roof.

Clearing his throat, he raises an eyebrow at both Walter and Nadia. "Having a good weekend?"

Walter drew back quickly and glanced up guiltily at the wtfauthorityfigure? standing there.

Unflappability comes with further training.

"Um... yes?" We were before you got here.

Nadia blinked and very slowly looked up at the Mountie. Crap.

"Weweren'tdoinganythingwrong!" she said very quickly and very loudly.

Fraser steps closer to Nadia and Walter.

"No, you weren't," he agrees. "Isn't the roof a bit dangerous for this sort of activity?"

Nadia immediately tensed and scowled. Why was everyone always trying to tell her what she could and couldn't do?

"We come up here all the time."

If he thought sitting and kissing was dangerous, he would have had a heart attack to see them Schottishe-ing. Or jumping off the roof.

"There's going to be a class up here. At night. In the dark."

"With a teacher," Fraser points out. "I wouldn't want you two to become caught up in the heat of...what you were doing and forget that a ledge was nearby."
