The roof, Sunday afternoon

Nadia perched on the edge of the roof, her stereo beside her, playing a Doris Day number as Nadia tried to figure out some chording on the guitar to the tune. Lucas had given her the day off in honor of the end of the semester.

She wasn't emo, or brooding, or smoking, or eating brownies, just sitting and enjoying the afternoon and the music.

Pippi's head appeared over the edge of the ledge.

"Hey!"

Nadia smiled. "Hey Pippi! How are you?"

"Not bad." she said scrabbling over the side.

Walter arrived more traditionally, having managed to escape All and Sundries with his skin intact. Somehow he had the feeling it had been a near thing.

"Hi Pippi." No, that wasn't a doofy grin for Nadia. Well, maybe a little. "Hey, you."

That was, in fact, a doofy grin on Nadia's face. "Hey."

If you don't make your mind up we'll never get started,
And I don't wanna wind up being parted broken hearted. . . .

She made a quick face and reached over to turn off the music.

Awww. Pippi wanted to hear how it turned out.

"What's news?"

I'm accumulating quite a list of people who are going to hurt me? Nah, that wasn't really news.

"Nothing really. I was going to go to Stuff for Sale, but All and Sundries was open today. I picked up some summer supplies."

"Oh yeah? Like what?" Nadia asked, setting her guitar to the side, and hoping Walter hadn't been paying attention to the lyrics of the song.

Because after last night, she did want to talk to him about that stuff . . . but not while Pippi was up here.

Walter sat down next to Nadia to dangle his feet and kick the side of the building. "A pool float and some sunscreen, a hat, those sorts of things. What are you two up to today?"

He'd missed the song lyrics, a bit distracted after his not quite played talk with Veronica.

"Not much..." said Pippi scratching the ledge idly.

"...Do you need me to leave?"

"What?" Nadia blinked, then shook her head. "No, of course not. Why would we need you to leave?"

Putting off a potentially bad conversation was always something to be prologned.

"Why would I chase off a friend?" Well, he could think of a couple of reasons, but not in the middle of a Sunday afternoon on the roof.

"Oh I dunno..."

Could it be that Pippi also listens to the radio but has more tact then most of the rest of the student body?

Pippi?

Nadia narrowed her eyes at Pippi. "Well, you're the one who said it,"

If the girl had something to say, then she'd best get it over with. At least Pippi probably knew she could take care of herself.

Walter looked between Pippi and Nadia.

"Ya know. I should put away all that laundry." she said climbing back over the ledge.

As she lowered herself down and caught the drain pipe with her foot she looked at Nadia.

"If you break his heart? We're going to have a problem."

And her head sank down out of sight.

Nadia watched her climb back down for a moment, then sat back, leaning on her hands, and shook her head.

"Well, at least she didn't threaten you."

Walter shook his head in bemusement and leaned over to catch a glimpse of Pippi. "I think it was your turn. The list of people threatening me keeps growing."

Pippi poked her head out of the window.

"That goes for you too Walter!" she yelled up.

*sound of window shutting*

"There we go. My day won't be complete without a threat of bodily harm from now on." He cocked his head at Nadia and smiled. "Are you having fun with that? The fact that so many people care about you?"

Nadia raised an eyebrow. "That part's nice. It would be nicer if all those people figured out that if you hurt me, I'll just hurt you back."

She rolled her eyes. "Marty was pretty ridiculous last night, huh."

"I just didn't like the way he talked about you as though you weren't there." Or his talk of demanding a commitment. That was definitely over the top in Walter's opinion.

Nadia scowled. "He does that. Part of his 'big brother' attitude, or something." Should she bring up the commitment part? Or would that only scare Walter away?

"That's why I'm not going to hold it against him." Walter stared down at the ground and idly kicked the building.

"What do you think he meant by 'commitment?'"

Right, well if he was going to mention it, that made it free reign, right?

"Not kissing other girls. Or boys. Not kissing anyone else. He wasn't talking about sex or marriage or anything like that."

And now she was babbling. Great.

"Ah."

Walter stared down at the ground for a minute or two. "I'm not kissing anyone else, but we haven't even gone on a real date yet. Other than prom," he added hastily.

"Prom wasn't a date," Nadia said, almost as quickly. "We just went as friends, remember?" They hadn't even been friends that kissed then. Well, except that they did kiss at prom, once.

"A lot of people are interested in whether we're dating or not." Walter kept his face toward the ground and slid his eyes over to her. "Veronica also mentioned the word 'rebound.'" Although in his opinion the word "homosexual" might be more crucial.

Hmm. Yes. There was always the rebound question.

"If you don't think you're up to dating yet, then you shouldn't date."

Which definitely hurt to say, but, hell, she'd waited a good three months for Walter to notice her as a potential date, she could wait a bit longer, if she had to.

"It seems to me that what we've been doing lately is a lot like dating." He was still facing the ground, watching her sidelong. "In fact, it seems just like dating without the word 'date.'"

"So." Nadia stuck her feet out and examined them. "Do you want to attach the word to it, then?"

Walter examined her feet as well. They looked like... feet.

"You want to date a questionably gay guy from the 40s who broke up with his boyfriend a month ago?"

Nadia laughed. "I've had a crush on you forever, Walter. Despite the gay thing, despite the 40s thing, and yes, despite the break up thing. I think it's up to you to decide if you want to try dating a girl from Argentina who you've seen at her absolute worst."

Okay, shut up, now, before you completely talk him out of it. . . .

Walter hooked his arm through Nadia's and leaned close enough for their shoulders to touch. "I think I'd like to give it a try. If the definition is that we aren't kissing other people and we have fun together." With kissing!

"I'd like that." Nadia smiled, leaning back. "And tell anyone who threatens you from now on that if they bother you, I'll kick their butt."

"'The girl I'm dating is going to kick your butt?'" Walter asked and shook his head. "I don't think so. But I will tell any girls who threaten me from now on to speak to you about it, since you have first dibs." He'd take care of the guys himself.

"Works for me." Nadia leaned her head against his shoulder, kicking her feet against the wall. "So. If we're dating, we should probably try . . . a date."

"I think that's part of it, yes?

"Something traditional for a first date. Dinner at a restaurant - not Cafe Fina, please - a walk on the beach or maybe some roof dancing?" He kissed the top of her head. "How does that sound?"

"Sounds wonderful. Maybe that chinese restaurant. That way, no Wadsworth staring at us the whole time."

"And no Alfred," Walter added. Which was a definite bonus. "Since we're being traditional, let's make it Friday."

Hm. Yes. No nervousness about being around his boss. Score.

"Perfect."
