It was a dark and stormy night.

Nadia jogged through Fandom slowly, her feet splashing in the puddles, kicking up pink stars as the water reflected the light from the rose-tinted street lamps.

A frog ambled--walked, not hopped--slowly across the road in front of her.

Furrball was jogging with her, sometimes on his hind legs, sometimes on all fours, sometimes in front of her, sometimes behind. As they passed the butcher shop, he pulled ahead again, but was brought up short as lightning flashed and a giant suit of armor appeared in the road.

Nadia halted, staring up at the robot looking thing as it bent down and very gently picked up her cat.

She squinted.

Lightning flashed.

"Alphonse?"

The armor nodded sadly.

"What happened to you?"

The armor looked to the side and down. Lightning flashed again, and in between the light and the thunder, he was just Alphonse again.

"Human transmutation." Said the armor. "We were punished."

"Alchemy," Nadia whispered, and she stepped forward and placed a hand on the armor's arm.

"It's a science. It has rules and cause and effect just like any science. You mix the wrong ingredients and things go wrong."

Nadia was about to reply, when a scream echoed over the town.

The armor stiffened. "Nina," And thundered off into the dark of the night.

"Alphonse, wait!" Nadia scrambled after him, but she couldn't seem to keep up as she kept sliding on the puddles and having to push herself forward with her hands paws hands paws hands.

Her ears twitched forward as another sound rode through the air under the thunder, this time the crying of a small girl. She scurried around a corner and spotted a broken door on the side of one of the buildings. The cry rang out again and she dashed in, only to skid to a halt as the light flickered on around her and she saw the creature that had once been Nina and once been a dog. She reeled back and hissed.

"
That's a science?"

"Yes," said Alphonse. He turned to her, holding out an enormous, metal hand. Nadia sniffed at it for a second before climbing on and allowing him to lift her. He seemed almost to smile. "It has rules and cause and effect. You mix the wrong ingredients--((human transmutation))--and things--((we were punished))--go wrong."

Nadia sat up in bed, gave a single gasp, then slumped slightly, her face twisting in confusion. "Alphonse is going to become a robot?"

This has already happened.

She sighed, then grabbed the key Walter had given her. She'd slept in, odds were good that Al was up and even better that he was in his room.

This time she wasn't going to wait around for answers.
