After getting back from Empire Records, Nadia headed back up to her room. Lucas was right. She did have a lot to think over.

It was time she stopped letting whatever was happening to her control her. It was time to do something about it. Something positive, this time. So she called Bridge.

Then she grabbed her guitar, spent about twenty minutes tuning it, and started to play.

Pippi came out of the girl's bathroom after washing off her last attempt of finding a new look (http://strongestgirl.livejournal.com/29148.html#cutid1) when she heard music coming from Nadia's room.

She sounded very good.

*knock knock*

Nadia set her guitar to one side, wondering if it was Walter showing up to check in on her. "It's open," she called.

Pippi poked her head in, her hair was back in braids which were heavy with water.

"Hey!" she said, "You're sounding great!"

Nadia tilted her head. "Thank you. It's been awhile since I've practiced." She hadn't really talked to Pippi since Thursday, but so far, talking to people was working out okay. "How are you?"

Pippi considered this for a moment.

"Pretty good I think." she said, "Kinda bored, so I'm trying to figure out a different way to wear my hair and stuff."

She tugged on a braid.

"Not going very smoothly."

Nadia blinked. "What's wrong with the braids?"

"Nothing's wrong with the braids. I'm just messing around."

Nadia nodded. She could understand that. That was how she'd ended up with red streaks, feeling bored and wanting to mess around.

She patted her bed to indicate for Pippi to sit down. "What did you try?"

"I tried straitening it like I did for the Play." she said, "But that's a lot of work."

"I bet it did. I had some friends in the orphanage who liked to straighten their hair." Nadia looked at Pippi thoughtfully for a moment. "Do you want to wear it up, or down?"

"I don't usually wear it down unless it falls out of the braids." said Pippi.

"But when I put it down on purpose I usually wear a hat."

"Hm." Nadia scooted over a little. "Can I . . . ?" She held out her hands to see if Pippi would mind her trying something with her hair. "Why don't you like to wear it down?"

"Sure." she said sitting down next to Nadia.

"I don't know." she gave it some thought. "I guess it keeps it out of my face."

Nadia quickly set about gently unbraiding Pippi's hair. "I can see that. Do you use any gel or anything?"

"I met the man she was talking about in the article. Sunday, in the sewers. He said he was made from other people. Phoebe listed off a bunch of people. Her, Bel, Me..."

Her eyes widened. "Madre--"

Okay, there was seriously something wrong with this town last weekend.

"How?"

"I'm not sure, something about needles. Bel said he thought he'd been stung by a bee and Phoebe said that it was somebody taking blood from him. I don't even know when it could have been done in my case. I have it on good authority that it's not an easy thing to draw blood from me."

Needles. Goddamned needles.

Nadia shuddered. "Who would do that? And what does it have to do with Walter?"

"Considering one of them showed up and sent me through a wall before killing the man just when he was about to tell us who sampled us and made him? I'd say it was the aforementioned Nazis... And, Walter was one of the people listed, who were supposedly sampled for that purpose."

Nadia squeezed her hands into fists, kind of wanting to get her mallet and go beat the crap out of something. Pippi had been thrown through a wall, her friends had been sampled--

How did she not know this already? Why hadn't she noticed there was something else that people were having to worry about?

Right. She'd been hiding out in her room all week. She suddenly felt very selfish.

And kind of nauseous.

"You're right. I don't think that conversation would go very well."

"Yes, and seeing as how I've managed to not tell him for a whole week that's going to make it just so much better."

This is Pippi Longstocking, being sarcastic and grim, savor the moment.

Nadia started lightly hitting her thigh with one fist. "He's been . . . a little busy, lately. I'm sure he'll understand."

Pippi nodded.

"I can't believe he thinks I'm mad at him." she said, "We tryed to talk about it the next morning... But, I didn't want to push the subject. It's been a while, since then. For everybody but him."

Nadia shrugged. "You'll have to talk to him, I guess. I think he thought you weren't saying much because you were mad, or something. I told him you probably weren't, but . . . I'm not really in a position to give him advice, right now."

"Well," Pippi said looking in the mirror again. "I can't speak to that, sounds like good advice to me. But you do know your way around a head of hair."

Pippi gave Nadia a (gentle) hug.

"I should probably go to bed so I can be up in time for class or something." she said. "Sweet dreams."
